IIT Kanpur is one of the 1st generation IITs of the country. The institute is known for its Engineering courses and ranks at #6 by NIRF in 2020 among the top Engineering colleges of India. The reason behind its success is the 100% Ph.D. holding faculty, 1:12 faculty-student ratio, 95.89% graduation rate, and 93.17% placement rate in 2020.
B.Tech in CSE is the most popular course of IIT Kanpur. Admission into the course is based on JEE Advanced scores followed by JoSAA counseling. The cutoff for the popular B.Tech specialization in Computer Science & Engineering recorded a fall in the closing 2020 rank (239) from 219 closing rank in 2019. The fees for B.Tech are INR 2.16 Lakhs for the first year. The highest CTC bagged by students at IIT Kanpur placement drive 2010-21 was INR 1.47 crores.
IIT Kanpur at present has 5000+ students enrolled in its different courses across all years. In 2019, more than 620 students from UG, PG, and Ph.D. courses graduated from IIT Kanpur, within the minimum stipulated time.
As per the latest update, IIT Kanpur and SGPGI Lucknow have signed MoU to set up a Centre of Excellence to back innovations in healthcare studies using indigenous solutions. The MoU was signed on June 29 and key members like Prof. R. K. Dhiman, Director, SGPGI, and Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur was present.

IIT Kanpur Admission
Admissions at IIT Kanpur are entrance-based only, followed by counseling.
- For both B.Tech & BS, IIT Kanpur accepts JEE Advanced rank followed by JoSAA Counselling.
- M.Tech & MS admissions on the other hand require GATE scores. Counseling for M.Tech is through COAP. Last year IIT Madras conducted COAP.
- While, M.Des admission at IIT Kanpur, is based on CEED exam scores.
- MBA admissions are based on CAT scores and for M.Sc admissions, the IIT-JAM score is accepted.
- Ph.D. admissions in either Engineering, Management, Science or Humanities accept corresponding bachelor’s or master’s degree with scores in any of the given entrance exams that they previously qualified or are yet to qualify for CAT / GATE / CEED / JRF / NET or any other entrance accepted equivalent to these.
How to Apply?
Applications vary per course and its respective entrance exam. The applicants can apply for entrance, counseling, and admission online through one common application.
- B.Tech application would be commonly accepted through JEE website, but for counseling (through JoSAA) applicants will have to register again separately. Similarly for M.Tech applicants.
- Counseling portals are not application portals, thus candidates must ensure they read all instructions before submitting any application.
- Only PhD applications are accepted through IIT Kanpur website only. Applicants can access it when portal links open.
IIT Kanpur Cutoff
IIT Kanpur releases a cutoff for admission for each of its courses. Ranks are released commonly. In this case, IIT Kanpur deserves the right to admit applicants as per the ranks decided by its admission branch. Cutoff ranks are released for B.Tech and BS when counseling begins.

In 2020, CAT percentile was 92.5 for MBA admissions. For 2021 MBA admissions at IIT Kanpur, CAT 2020 overall proposed percentile is 85.
IIT Kanpur Ph.D.
IIT Kanpur offers a Ph.D. program in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary areas. For admissions to the course, a bachelor’s or master’s degree is required along with a valid score in GATE/NET/JRF and CEED. The institute also conducts a written test and personal interview for the selection of candidates.
Financial Assistance is also available for the Ph.D. students at IIT Kharagpur in which a stipend of INR 25,00 will be given for the first two years and thereafter it is raised to INR 28,000 respectively for another two-year.
IIT Kanpur MBA
IIT Kanpur offers a full-time MBA program for a duration of two years under the Department of Industrial & Management Engineering. The program is offered in areas like Manufacturing Management and Service Management along with the functional areas of Operations, Systems, Marketing, Finance, and Human Resource Management.
Admissions into the program are done on the basis of CAT scores and the cutoff for the same was 95 percentile for the 2021 admissions. The institute also conducts a Group Discussion and Personal Interview for the selection of candidates.
IIT Kanpur M.Tech
IIT Kanpur offers an M.Tech program in 13 specializations. The admission to the IIT Kanpur MTech program is based on GATE score, previous academic record, and the interview round. The institute offers direct admission to candidates who have completed their BTech degree form an IIT by 2021 with current CPI >= 8.0 and CPI of last two years >= 8.0 are offered direct admission in the stream of first preference. For other candidates, IIT Kanpur create a list of candidates and invite them for the further admission process on the basis of GATE score.

IIT Kanpur Scholarships
Various types of scholarships are offered at IIT Kanpur to both meritorious and those with low finances. The scholarships are in turn, either merit-based or need-based. The following scholarships can be availed by applicants at IIT Kanpur:
- Merit cum Means Scholarship: This type of scholarship is offered to SC / ST applicants who maintain a CPI of 6.5. They get a full tutition fee waiver, INR 1000 as pocket money allowance. Only parents’ annual income certificate stating below INR 4.5 LPA is mandatory for availing this scholarship.
- INSPIRE – Merit Based Scholarship: A scholarship amount of INR 30,000 is offered to BS students per semester, along with a research grant of INR 20,000 based on AIR in Chemistry, Physics and mathematics department.
- Sports Scholarship: Around 20 scholarships with an amount of INR 1000 for 9 months is awarded to IIT Kanpur students showing exemplary leadership in sports and its corresponding growth.
- Private Scholarships: There are 115 private scholarships that are extended to UG students with 6.5 CPI and above. Some of them are – Class of 1984 Scholarship, Dr. KP Gupta Scholarship, etc.

Cut Off
IIT Kanpur Cutoff 2021 would begin releasing for various national level exams, as and when their results are declared. IIT Kanpur reserves the right to set its cut off for JEE Advanced, GATE, IIT JAM and CAT every year for its B.Tech, M.Tech, MS and MBA courses respectively.
Cut off would be released commonly through the respective counselling bodies for each course, category wise. Only CAT percentile and scores are released in the admission policy of IIT Kanpur MBA admissions each year. Shortlisting takes place for those candidates who qualify for the given minimum CAT scores.
IIT Kanpur JEE Advanced Cutoff 2021
B.Tech and BS applicants willing to apply for IIT Kanpr admisiion have to qualify JEE Advanced in order to appear for JoSAA counselling. There are total 8 specializations offered in IIT Kanpur B.Tech. The opening rank for CSE was 111 in the year 2020 and the admissions closed at 239 rank. For admission in Electrical Engineering, candidates can expect the IIT Kanpur cutoff between 400-1000. The IIT Kanpur cutoff 2021 are not out yet, however the 2020 cutoff is tabulated below to know the expected cutoff range.

GATE cutoff for various IITs depends solely on a couple of factors like total applicants, highest scores, educational background and other miscellaneous factors. Upon combining these factors, GATE rank is released.

IIT Kanpur kick-started its 2020-21 placement drive with 226 placement offers wherein Graviton Trading picked 3 students for a package worth INR. 82 LPA and QuantBox offered a package of INR. 80 LPA to one student. Google and Microsoft also offered some attractive packages for domestic profiles at the institute.
By the fourth day since the inauguration of its 2020-21 placement drive, the institute managed to bag a whopping INR. 1.47 Crore package by an MNC. Even amidst the pandemic, the institute hosted over 230 recruiters.
The institute concluded the First Phase of the 2020-21 placement drive, with 821 offers out of 709 were accepted by the students. The entire placement process was conducted online.
During the 2019-20 placement drive, the IIT Kanpur had witnessed a 93.17% placement record. The highest CTC had stood at INR. 1.54 CPA. However, under the MBA program, the highest CTC had stood at INR. 20 LPA.

Around 50+ start-up firms mainly from the software domain were invited to hire at IIT-Kanpur. A special contribution from CDAP (Cell for differently-abled persons) at IIT-Kanpur also pitched in by sensitising their special needs to the recruiting firms beforehand.
Google and Microsoft also offered some attractive packages for domestic profiles at the institute. Cohesity offered the US profile to one student. Other leading domestic offers of over INR. 60 LPA. were made by Apple and Cohesity (for Indian profiles). With a year on year, the internship increase of 24% in stipend offered to the students. The highest offered package stood at INR 90000 with the median at INR 50000 and the average stipend offered at INR 51600. The highest number of offers was made by the Marketing sector with 32% of offers followed by Analytics with 30% offers. The lowest offers were made by the Operations sector with only 6% offers.

Scholarship Description
Being one of the top engineering institutes of India, IIT Kanpur offers a wide variety of programs to enroll in and to support the students financially, numerous scholarships are being offered for the 1st year students at IIT Kanpur. Apart from the scholarships offered by the institute, there are several other options for financial aid and scholarship offered by the alumni as well. Some of the popular scholarships at IIT Kanpur are mentioned below.
Merit Cum Means Scholarships:

The Merit Cum Means Scholarship is offered on the basis of the merits scored by the students in the entrances or last qualification.
- In the scholarship, students receive a full tuition waiver and pocket money of INR 1000 per month.
- In order to be eligible for the MCM scholarship, a candidate must have maintained a minimum CPI of 6.5 and if the minimum CPI falls, the monthly pocket money will be withdrawn.
- The MCM Scholarship can be availed by the candidates belonging to the category of SC/ST or candidates whose annual parental income is less than 4.5 lakhs.
INSPIRE Scholarship:

INSPIRE Scholarship offered by IIT Kanpur can be availed by the Students of B.S programs within the ALL INDIA RANK (AIR) 10,000 as per Common Merit LIST (CML) in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics departments.
- As an award, students receive an annual scholarship of INR 30,000 per semester (INR 60,000 annually), along with a research grant of INR 20,000.
- However, the scholarship is merit-based, the students must have maintained a minimum CPI of 6.0.
- Also, students are required to submit an undertaking for not getting any other scholarship to the SSPC every semester to apply for this scholarship.
Sports Scholarship:

Students who have shown excellence in sports events and activities on the campus are eligible to avail the Sports Scholarship.
- IIT Kanpur offers a maximum of 20 scholarships every year along with an amount of INR 1000 for 9 months.
External Scholarship

The hostels of IIT Kanpur are well equipped with all the latest facilities such as mess/canteen, recreational activities, sports facilities, etc. The hostel facility is available for both domestic and international students. IIT Kanpur has 10 Boys Hostel and 2 Girls Hostel along with one girl's residence tower. The hostels at the institute are together called as Halls of Residence and all the newly admitted undergraduate students are allotted in the Hall 2, 3, 5 and 10. However, the rooms are available in twin sharing for the 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students and the single sharing rooms are only available for the students of 3rd and 4th year.
